At home: activities you can do with your kids!

Written by the Serve the Kids committee

Because of the Corona virus, children cannot go to school, with all the associated problems. In this post we share some tips for simple activities that you can do with the kids at home! To minimize the need to leave the house, all activities can be done with things that most people already have at home.

1. Crafting animals

Spring is approaching and what could be more fun than making some cute animal crafts! There are all kinds of options and you can make it as crazy as you want. Think for example of a rabbit, a chicken, a bee or a pig. All you need are toilet rolls, colored paper (and / or paint) and some markers. You can even make a garland from all these cute animals. For this you only have to make two holes in each toilet roll animal and then you connect the animals together by means of a string. Now you have a new decoration for the room!

2. Write a card for grandpa and grandma

Not being able to visit Grandma and Grandpa is difficult, but it is the perfect time to send them a letter or card! Have the children decorate a blank card or grab a postcard that has been in the closet for years and let the children come up with a sweet message for grandparents. It is guaranteed to brighten them up!
Tip: many elderly people today are alone in care homes and experience feelings of loneliness. It can also be fun to have the children write a short letter to the elderly of a care home!

3. Craft a castle or pencil box

Another fun craft you can make with toilet rolls is a mega castle. This is a fun activity for both boys and girls, which you are also busy with. Again, all you need is toilet rolls, paint, colored paper and some markers. You can make the castle as big and colorful as you want. A variant of the toilet roll castle is the toilet roll pen tray. All you have to do is decorate some toilet rolls with paper of your choice. Then you stick the rolls together and you have a very creative and also self-designed pen tray. Maybe the children even make a pencil box for the parents who work at home!

4. Take a photo quest

A photo quest is very easy and fun: all you have to do is take a dozen photos of details in your house and let the kids find these spots. Don’t make it too easy and photograph details in all rooms of the house: the living room, the bedroom, the attic. The winner gets a candy!

5. Homemade table football

Because of the Corona virus, children cannot always play outside. Fortunately, there is plenty to do inside. For example, you can play a game of football with a homemade table football. All you need is an old shoe box, some straws, pegs and a ball. You can decorate the shoe box completely the way you want. Just make some holes in the box for the goals, and you’re all set to compete!

6. Paint chickens

Our latest craft idea is very easy: all you need is paint and paper! Have your child paint his / her hand yellow and make a print with the yellow paint on the paper. Then you make a few more yellow fingerprints behind the hand, what the chicks become. The last thing you have to do is apply the details with red and black paint: a few legs, a beak and an eye and the painting is complete! Perfect for spring and for Easter.

We hope that the ideas and tips we shared in this post make these strange times a little more bearable and, above all, more fun!
