The invitations were designed by committee members Ilona Neve (STH) and Ghislaine Den Hollander (Plato).
On Sunday 8 March we – committee Serve the Homeless – organized a dinner for refugees from Tilburg in collaboration with student association Plato. The dinner took place at the student association.
The refugees we had invited live at Sterk Huis at various locations in Tilburg. They go to a Dutch language school to learn the language better.
At half past two we had started with a group of volunteers preparing the dinner and decorating the location. The theme of the dinner was jungle.
The refugees arrived at the location around four o’clock. At the beginning it was a bit awkward. Both for the refugees and for the students. Fortunately, conversations started quickly and games were played. Later that evening even dance lessons were given to the students.
A total of three courses were served. All dishes have been determined in collaboration with Robin (our contact person at ”Sterk Huis”).
As a starter everyone could choose between zucchini soup or tomato soup. The soups were served with bread and various spreads.
As main course we also had a choice, since the food had to be prepared halal and there were also a number of vegans. In addition, everyone had the choice of couscous with (halal) chicken and vegetables or couscous with paprika (and vegetables). We were helped by the refugees in these preparations. They have made a salad in the meantime.
Finally we had the dessert. For dessert we had made a fruit salad. This was served with ice cream. There was both normal sorbet ice cream and vegan ice cream.
The menu was designed by committee member Ilona Neve (STH).
At the end of this evening we were told that the refugees had a nice evening!
The purpose of this evening was to get to know each other better. We hope that we can set up many great activities for this target group!
An International Champions League will soon be held in collaboration with student association AEGEE. We also play football with students and refugees. This activity takes place on Thursday, April 30. More information about this activity will follow soon!
